Frequently asked questions

How do I sign up for a course?

The first step is to attend our Open House! It’s a great way to learn how our Salsa On2 program works, meet the team, and get a feel for the class environment.

If you’re new to salsa—or still building your foundation—you’ll get to try a free beginner class in Level 0 or Level 1.

If you already have experience, we’ll personally assess your dancing and place you in the level that best matches your current proficiency and goals.

Do I need any dance experience to join?

Not at all! Our Level 0 – Intro to Salsa On2 course is made for complete beginners. You don’t need any prior dance experience—just come ready to have fun and learn something new.

Do I need to bring a partner?

Nope! You don’t need to bring a partner. We balance the number of leaders and followers in each course, and everyone rotates during class—so you’ll get to dance with a variety of partners.

Do I have to rotate partners?

We ask everyone to rotate partners, including couples, because our classes focus on social dancing. It’s a great way to improve your skills, meet new people, and learn how to adapt to different partners. If you and your partner do not want to rotate, we recommend our private lessons.

What should I wear to class?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows movement. For footwear, choose shoes with smooth soles. Avoid sneakers with heavy grip or open-toed shoes.

Do you offer online classes?

Yes! Our online platform offers comprehensive salsa courses you can access anytime, anywhere. Perfect for those who prefer to learn at their own pace.

What if I miss a class?

If you miss a class, you can review the session through our online platform (for online members). Instructions are recorded and uploaded for our online members.

Are there opportunities to practice outside of class?

Absolutely! At the end of each course, we host a social dance outing where you can practice what you’ve learned in a real dance setting, with classmates and seasoned members of the San Diego Salsa Dance community.

Do you only offer weekend classes?

We also have Weeknight classes for Solo Skills and Partnering Skills (Monday and Thursday).

How do I know which level is right for me?

We host regular Open Houses before each new series to help evaluate your dancing and make sure you’re placed in the level that’s best for you.

What is Salsa On2?

Salsa On2 is a style of salsa dancing where the break steps—the forward and back movements—happen on the 2nd and 6th beat of the music. This creates a smooth feel that emphasizes musical instruments like the conga and clave. It’s also known as New York-style salsa.

Why would I learn New York-style when I live in San Diego?

Even though Salsa On2 originated in NYC, it’s danced around the world—including here in San Diego! This smooth style of salsa can enhance your musicality and expand your ability to connect with dance partners both locally and globally.
